Going Through The Motions

Checking in with one of my ladies this week, I was ecstatic to receive this response:

I probably went more through the motions than anything, but this week I will put more effort into it.

Does it seem a little strange to you that THIS was the response I was so excited about? It seemed a little strange for me too, so let me explain my thought process.


SO MANY PEOPLE have this bull-shit ALL OR NOTHING mentality. In the context of exercise, that sounds a little like this:

  • If I don't have time for the whole thing, it's not worth it.

  • I'm not feeling well, I'll do it tomorrow.

  • I know I'm going to suck at it, so why should I try?

  • Life is just too crazy right now.

  • (insert yours here)

When you're working to create a habit that's going to last, YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE MOTIONS!! It's just part of the process. Going through the motions is what CREATES the habit! Habit is what kicks in when the motivation is gone!! Going through the motions is what you can do when you really freaking don't feel like doing it. Going through the motions is NOT a waste of time!! It what makes you just a little bit better than you were yesterday. In this context, it's how you love your body and treat it the way it deserves to be treated. Eventually, motivation will show back up and you will kick ass!! But for now, if GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS is all you can do, CELEBRATE the fact that you simply CHOSE to SHOW UP!
